About Puer Tea

Puer is a variety of dark tea and like dark tea, it is fermented and probiotic. Taste-wise, puer can range from a medium-bodied brew with a lighter mouthfeel and sweet notes to an extremely thick, strong cup with a bold mouthfeel and intense taste. A well-aged raw or well-produced ripe puer will yield little to no astringency, which is a unique quality amongst tea varieties.

Puer is almost exclusively grown and produced in the Yunnan region of China. The Chinese government recently issued a special classification for puer, declaring it a geographically-specific product.

Types of Puer

Sheng Puer: Sheng Puer is also known as “raw” puer

Shou Puer: Also known as “ripe” puer, this group is sometimes incorrectly referred to as “cooked” puer. This is likely in reference to the process Shou Puer undergoes which is meant to imitate the aging of Sheng (raw) puer.
